The Assam secondary board of council for education was setup on 1st June 1984 with an aim to promote and establish the higher secondary education in Assam. The structure of the council is managed by the Chairman. Other committee head includes controller and Administrative officer who all are responsible in functioning of various units and sectional departments. There are various branches of Assam higher secondary education and it includes;-Academic branch, Accounts branch, Certificate branch, Establishment branch, examination branch, Pension cell, store etc.

Major Functionalities:

There are various functions and operations that are performed by the Assam board and this includes the following:-

• To prescribe curricula ( scheme of studies ), syllabus and courses of instruction for Higher Secondary stage for schools and colleges.
• To conduct examinations.
• To receive fees that may be prescribed by the regulations and rules.
• We are responsible to publish the result of its examination.
• We are responsible to grant certificate to students clearing the examinations.
• We are responsible to institute and award scholarships, freeships etc.
• We are responsible to prescribe and select text books and various other supplementary books.
• We are responsible in laying down conditions of recognition of Higher Secondary School and Junior Colleges.
• We are responsible to recognize H S School and to withdraw such recognition.
• We are responsible to take such disciplinary actions.
• We are responsible to adopt measures for study and examination problems in fields.
• We are responsible to advise the Government on physical, moral and social Welfare of students in recognize.
• We are responsible to prescribe necessary qualifications of teachers in recognized for schools.
• We are responsible to receive grants from the Government and donations from private and individuals or some other associations.
