Two small-town girls figure among the top 10 scores of IITJEE in a list mostly populated by boys. Aditi Laddha from Ratlam secured the all-India rank of six and Sibbala Leena Madhuri from Tirupati stood eighth.
In 2004, Priya Gupta stood second; but thereafter, the highest rank girls secured was in double digits.
Last year, the girl topper got an all-India rank of 21. An analytical report by the IITs has pointed out that girls get lower ranks. This year, of the total 21,110 students who have qualified, 2,392 are girls. Last year, 2,886 girls had qualified.
A practice of the 1990s is being revived again. The IITs will open their classrooms for special coaching for quota students when the new batch walks in this August. A 'bridge course', the coaching will ensure full capacity at the institutions while bringing low-scoring quota students up to par. A total of 276 students will undergo year long training at the IITs before they can clear another test and join them. Students have been selected for preparatory classes after the final cut-off for the reserved category was relaxed by half.
