The IIM’s are considered as the best management schools in India. There exist a total of 13 IIM’s each of which is autonomous and has independent control over its own everyday operations. The IIM council, headed by the Minister of Human Resource Development and consisting of all the directors and chairpersons of all the IIM’s, oversee the overall strategy implemented by the IIM’s as well as taking care of its administration.

The Indian Institute of Managements all offer a flagship program called the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) which lasts for 2 years and offers the PGDM Degree or the Post Graduate Diploma in Management. Some IIM’s currently also offer a one year postgraduate diploma course for executives who are experienced, while some offer the Fellow Program in Management which is a doctoral degree. This postgraduate program and the Fellowship in Management are considered as MBA and PhD in their respective fields. Finally, many IIM’s also have short term courses and part time programs such as EMBA.

The admission procedure for the IIM’s is common through an exam called the Common Admission Test or CAT for short. This exam is one of the most difficult exams in the world with a success rate of only 5 out of a thousand selected. Additionally, GMAT scores are considered for admission to the one year programs. This test is followed by essay evaluation, as well as an intensive interview round.
