The Bangalore University is an autonomous and public University located in the city of Bangalore, in the state of Karnataka, India. The University was founded in the year 1886, making it one of the oldest Universities in India. The University is currently given the power of affiliation by the University Grants Commission and is a part of The Association of Indian Universities. The University was known as the Central College and awarded degrees before the 10th of July 1964, when it was officially renamed to the Bangalore University and converted to a State University. The University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering and the Central College in Bangalore were merged to form the Bangalore University. The University resides on a 1100 acre large piece of land named the Jnana Bharathi Campus.

The University has 6 main faculties, namely, commerce and management, art, education, science, engineering and law. The University constitutes of a postgraduate centre located at Kolar, 43 postgraduate departments, 3 constituent colleges, over 650 affiliated colleges and many other Directorates of research and higher learning under its wing. The University offers more than 50 employment oriented diplomas, postgraduate courses and certificate courses. The University has various integrated, 5 year courses too, such as the ones in Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Business Studies and Atmospheric Sciences. The University has a massive library too with a collection of over 3500000, which is still growing at the rate of more than 5000 books per year. The library has a subscription to more than 400 periodicals and journals in 45 different disciplines. The library also has a BALNET program which connects all the libraries in the University and its affiliated colleges together to provide for a centralized access to all its students.
