The Central Institute of Fisheries Education is an institute of higher education in fisheries science, and the only deemed university in this field, in India. The Institute has more than forty years of experience in the development of aquaculture and fisheries around the globe. The Institute was originally established in 1961 to impart in-service training to professionals working at fisheries and to handle the growing challenges faced by the fisheries industry. The University was granted its deemed status by the University Grant Commission in the year 1989. The university is known for its significant contributions to the field of fisheries and is one of the four primary institutes under the ICAR (Indian Council for Agricultural Research).

The programs carried out at the Central Institute of Fisheries Education include Phd programs in various specialized branches of this science, a Master of Fisheries Science postgraduate program and various research programs. They also provide technical support to fisheries, development agencies, entrepreneurs, farmers etc. Capacity enhancement programs for fisheries are also carried out at the institute. CIFE also operates four sub centres in various parts of the country, including ones in Rohtak in Haryana, Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, Kolkata in West Bengal and Powerkheda in Madhya Pradesh. The CIFE has good teams of dedicated researchers and scientists, and along with the state of the art infrastructure, the Central Institute of Fisheries Education is able to lead a knowledge based revolution, in the fields of aquaculture and fisheries, creating sustainable models in rural environments and ensures food and health security for the same.
