The Cochin University of Science and Technology is a public autonomous University for science and technology, located in the city of Kochi in Kerala, India. The University was established in 1971 and known only the University of Cochin till 1986 when it was renamed to its current name. The University has three campuses, two of those are located in Kochi itself while one is located in Kuttanad, 66 km from the city of Kochi. The main campus of the Cochin University of Science and Technology is located near national highway 47 and is spread out over 180 acres.
This main campus hosts the Central Library, the Administrative office, the departments, computer centre, workshops, labs, school of Engineering, guest houses, canteens, playgrounds and hostels. The second campus in Kochi itself is called the lakeside campus and is located about 12km from the larger campus near the waterfront. The departments located on this campus include, the Department of Chemical Oceanography, the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, the School of Ocean Science and Technology, the Microbiology and Biochemistry Departments, the School of Industrial Fisheries, the Department of Marine Geology and Geophysics, the Department of Marine Biology and the Department of Physical Oceanography. Finally, the third campus at Kuttanad, called the Pulinkunnu campus is home to the Cochin University College of Computer Applications and the Cochin University College of Engineering.
The University offers various graduate and postgraduate courses including programs in civil engineering, information technology, computer applications, electronics and communication engineering, mechanical engineering and Safety and fire engineering among others. A Centre of Excellence in Lasers and Optoelectronic Sciences was also established in the University in the year of 2002. The Department offers a five year integrated course in Photonics.
