The Devi Ahilya University, also known as the Indore University, is a State University in the state of Madhya Pradesh, located in the district of Indore. The University is named after one of the queens of the Holkar dynasty of the Marathas, Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar. The University was established in the year of 1964 and was inaugurated by the then Vice President of India, His Excellency Dr Zakir Hussain. The University was created by the legislative assembly of Madhya Pradesh in an act established in 1964. The University was initially called the Indore University, and was limited in jurisdiction to the Indore district. The University was renamed in 1988 to Devi Ahilya Vishwaviyalaya and its jurisdiction was now expanded to over seven districts in the Indore Division. The University achieved a NAAC four star University status in 2001, while simultaneously winning the Government of Madhya Pradesh award as a centre of Excellence the same year. In the year 2008 however, the University was relegated to B status by NAAC, although it still enjoys the status as one of the best Universities in Madhya Pradesh.
The admissions for the Indore University happen through the Combined Entrance Test organized by the University every year. The stakes are high, as only 9000 seats are available for over 1,50,000 applicants that apply every year. Courses are offered in various fields, including engineering, dental, medical, economics, life sciences, biochemistry and journalism. The University has also started the experiment of running courses that are self-supporting. Such initiatives have had a positive impact on the progress made by the University.
