The Dharamsinh Desai University was initially founded as the Dharmsinh Desai Institute of Technology, by Dharmsinh Dadubhai Desai in the year of 1968, as an Engineering and Technology institution of higher education. The University received and autonomous status in 1991 under the Gujarat University, and finally received a Deemed University status in the June of 2000. It was only in the year of 2005 that the University was renamed to Dharmsinh Desai University and got a full University status as recognized by the University Grants Commission. The University also happens to be the first University in the state of Gujarat to receive permission to start a course in Nanotechnology.
The University has various Faculties namely the Faculty of Commerce, Faculty of Technology, Faculty of Dental Science, Faculty of Management and Information Science, Faculty of Pharmacy and other Doctoral Programmes. The University has various faculty link with well known players in the industry such as Reliance Industries, KHS Germany and Infosys. The University also has a Memorandum of Understanding with the US University of University of Iowa, for a five year integrated BE+MS program. Further, a Memorandum of Understanding with Bosch Rexroth in the year of 2013 makes special training and labs available for students studying Electronics and Communications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Instrumentation and Control Engineering in the Dharmsinh Desai University. The Faculty of Technology at the University is ranked at 95th in the Country in the Survey done by Outlook. The University also won an award by the Oxford University as the Best Regional University in the year of 2013. This was the first time a University from Asia won this title.
