The National Institute of Technology Jalandhar, also known as NIT-Jalandhar or NITJ, is an institute of Engineering and Technology, located in Jalandhar, India. It was established in 1987 by the Government of India, earlier it was called Punjab Regional Engineering College, Jalandhar (PREC) but later it was renamed as National Institute of Technology in 2002 with the status of Deemed University. The campus of NIT-J occupies land of 160 acres and located on the G.T. road byepass, Amritsar. At present, NIT-Jalandhar has 3,500 students, over 100 faculty members. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D programs. The admission process for undergraduate programs takes place through AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Examination), however from 2013 onwards, the admission process will be through JEE-MAIN. The admission is conducted in three sections Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. The total seat for B.Tech program is around 786. The admission process for postgraduation program is through GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) which is organised by Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Science. The mode of Ph.D programs is through group discussions and personal interviews.
The academic departments of NIT-Jalandhar includes Applied Chemistry, Applied Mathematics Applied Physics, Bio-Technology, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Humanities and Management Industrial and Production Engineering, Civil Engineering, Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Textile Technology, Electrical Engineering and Mining Technology. NIT-Jalandhar has an unique concept of dedicated society to promote cultural and academic activities in the departments, which includes Society of Civil Engineers (SocCEr) Chemical Engineering Society (Ches), Professional Association of Computer Engineers (PACE) Society of Electronics and Communication Engineers (SOECE), Society of Progressive Instrumentation and Control Engineers (SPICE), The Industrial Engineers Society (TIES) Society of Mechanical Engineers (SOME), Textile Engineers Society (TES) and Society of Bio-Tech Engineers and Researchers (SOBER).
There are two major annual festival of NIT-Jalandhar, TechNITi and Utkansh. TechNITi is a techno-management festival organised every year in the month of September and students from all over the country take part in this event. Utkansh is an annual cultural festival organised every year in March. Its a four day theme based event with themes like folk, kavi sammelan, rock, comedy, fusion and theater. Apart from this there are other student activities like literary and debating society, fine arts society, music and dramatics society, photography society, quest, prayas, yoga club, movie club, raj bhasha samiti and UDAAN.
