The Goa University, is an autonomous, public University located in the city of Taleigao, state of Goa, India. The University was established in the year of 1985 and then recently merged with the Center for Post Graduate Instruction and Research, a division of the University of Mumbai (formerly University of Bombay). The University was accredited on the September of 2006 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and has been rated four stars. The University was established on the basis of the Goa University Act of 1984, its operations commencing in the year of 1985 on the 1st of June.
The campus of the University lies on the Taleigao plateau overlooking the Arabian Sea and the shores of the picturesque Dona Paula beaches. The Campus has buildings for the academic staff, library, life sciences, natural sciences, social sciences, language and literature, management studies, canteen and a centre for latin American Studies. The University has a total of 25 postgraduate departments and a couple of centres of higher studies which offer academic programmes that award either the Masters or Doctorate Degrees. The University has 12 faculties of education which operate various departments. The 12 faculties include the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Language and Literature, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Commerce, Faculty of Life Sciences and Environment, Faculty of Design, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Education, Research and Development, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Law and Justice, Faculty of Performing, Fine Arts and Music, Faculty of Management Studies and the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management.
