The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade is a public autonomous business school of higher education established by the Government of India in 1963. The Institute is a deemed University and also conducts its own autonomous entrance exams in various locations across India. An estimate of 55000 students appeared for these exams in 2011, for just 220 seats, making these exams some of the most difficulty exams to clear. The University was established with a goal to help India’s foreign trade management professionalize and increase exports via helping develop the human resources and the data it requires.
The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade has various centres that further education in Foreign Trade. The Centre for International Trade in Technology receives technical and financial support from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the Government of India. The next Centre in the IIFT is the Centre for WTO studies which provides analytical and research support continuously to the Department of Commerce on issues related to the World Trade Organization. The Department also carries out various research activities and publishes publications on subjects dealing with the World Trade Organization. The other Centre in the IIFT is the Centre for SME studies, basically dealing with Small and Medium Enterprises. The IIFT has a large library with over 84,000 books and with subscriptions to over 800 online and offline journals. The library contains various publications from IMF, FAO, OECD, UNCYC, UNCTAD, the World Bank and other various international agencies. IIFT has various notable alumni including Manu Sawhney the Executive Director of Manchester United, Dinesh Jain the CEO of Zee Turner, Sanjay Singh the MD of Yamaha Motors among many others.
