The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, also abbreviated IIM-A is a business school established by the Government of India, in Ahmedabad, Gujrat in 1961. It is the second IIM to be established after the IIM at Calcutta was established earlier the same year. The IIM was established as a response to the increasing demand for professional managers who could help with the management of India’s fast growing industrial infrastructure. The buildings in the IIM campus are icons of modern architecture, and were designed by the American architech, Louis Kahn. The IIM campus is considered one of his best works, the entire campus construction took over 8 years, from 1962 to 1974 using concrete and red bricks to give it a modern look.

Like all the other IIM’s IIM-A offers only diplomas in management. The flagship program at IIM A is the Post Graduate Programme in Management which is known for its depth and rigour, and is one of the most difficult MBA programs in the world to get admissions to. Other than this, a Post Graduate Programme in Agribusiness Management, also called PGP-ABM is offered. Both these courses are two year long and fully residential.

IIM-A has an extremely active students life. Confluence, an annual business meeting, and ConneXion, another annual event, are ways to get students and academicians to interact with the industry. There are other events such as Chaos, the biggest festival in the region. It draws an audience of more than 50,000 visitors in the 4 days that its active. Insight is another festival of the IIM A, which deals with Market research, and is the oldest event organized by the institution. The event lasts for 2 days and attracts the participation of top students from the best business schools around the country, who compete on topics ranging from product-launches, strategy, simulation games, advertising etc.

IIM-A has consistently ranked as the best business school in India. It also became the only Indian B-school on the Economist’s list of best Full-Time B-Schools by ranking at #56. The Financial Times ranked IIMA 26th best MBA college in the world, while the Global MBA rankings ranked the organization at number 11. In India, Business Today, CNBC-TV18 and Hindustan Times ranked IIMA as the #1 B-School in India and it was ranked as the 2nd best Business school in the Asia Pacific region by QS Global 200 Business Schools Report. It is generally understood that IIMA is the best school for budding entrepreneurs in India.
