The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta is a premiere public, business school, established in West Bengal, Kolkata, India. It was established on the 13th of November, 1961 and was the first IIM to be established. Post independence of India in 1947, it became vitally important to have trained manpower to drive the rapidly growing public sector in India. To solve this problem, the Planning Commission invited Professor George Robbins from the University of California to help set up elite management institutes in India, on whose recommendations the IIMs were founded.
IIM Calcutta, in its teething years, operated from the Emerald Bower on Barrackpur Trunk Road, Kolkata. The Institute officially moved to the new, current 135 acre, campus in 1975. IIM Calcutta is known as the IIM with the best on campus living experience of all the Indian Business schools. The teaching block sits right next to the administrative building, and has 4 oversized lecture halls, and many other smaller classrooms. Each classroom and lecture hall has advanced multimedia and visual-audio capabilities, along with being fully air conditioned. The Auditorium, known as Audi, is said to be the best of any campus Auditorium in India. It can host over 750 people and cost over 90 million rupees to build. The IIM-C library is called the BC Roy Memorial Library, and is the largest management library in Asia. The library plays host to over 160,000 books and subscriptions for hundreds of management magazines, with a huge collection of e-books and databases. IIM Calcutta has four main hostels, the Old hostel, the New hostel, the White Hostel and the Lake view hostel. Students who want to live with their families are provided with a separate accommodation.
Like every other IIM, IIM Calcutta offer only diploma certificates and not degrees. There are five, main programmes at IIMC, the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), which is a 2 year full time MBA program, the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), which is a doctoral programme, the Post Graduate Diploma in Computer aided Management (PGDCM), also a 2 year full time MBA course, the Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPEX), a full time MBA program for executives lasting 1 year and finally the Post Graduate Programme for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM), a full time, one year Executive MBA program. IIM Calcutta is also a member of CEMS (Global Alliance in Management Education, and hence also offers the CEMS Masters programme in International Management. A few other programs are offered at IIM-C, such as the Management Development Programmes (MDP), the Management Programmes for Armed Forces Officers (AFP), Custom Corporate Programmes, Distance Education programmes and Research and Consultancy programmes.
IIM Calcutta is the only business school in India that boasts of a membership to the CEMS. Additionally, the finance related courses in IIMC are considered as one of the best courses in the entire world for finance management. As far as rankings go, IIM-C has ranked #2 by Business Today and Outlook in 2013. Its flagship MBA programme has been ranked as the 19th best in the world. IIMC was also ranked as the 2nd in Economics and 1st in Finance worldwide. IIMC also happens to have some of the best faculty and staff, with many prominent figures, in the world of finance and marketing, making it to the teachers list.
