The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, abbreviated IIMB, is an autonomous, public B-school, located near the city of Bangalore in Karnataka, India. The Institute was established in 1973, and was the 3rd IIM to be established after the ones at Ahmedabad and Calcutta. While the old IIMs had catered to the private sector, IIMB was setup to cater to the requirements of the Public sector. In 1972 it was decided to setup an IIM at Bangalore for which the Government of Karnataka offered a donation of Rs 30 lac and over 100 acres of land for free. The Institute was finally inaugurated on the 28th of October 1973, by the then Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

The initial campus was rented from the St Joseph’s College of Commerce, before being shifted to the new campus at Bannerghatta Road in Bangalore south. The architecture for the new campus was designed by BV Joshi, the construction of which was finally completed in 1983. The entire IIMB campus has a nice retro-nostalgic look with its all stone buildings, landscaped gardens, lush green verdant woods and its idyllic atmosphere, making it an excellent place for research, teaching, consulting, studying and other professional activities. The Library at IIMB is a 55,000 square foot building, with four floors. The facility is entirely automated, and includes in its collections, over 2,35,000 books and documents, apart from a collection of over 85.000 magazines and journals related to management. The entire campus is completely WiFi enabled.

Like all other IIMs, IIMB does not offer degrees, but only diplomas. The flagship course at IIMB is its Post-Graduate Programme in Management, a full time, two year, residential course, which on completion awards the student with a Post Graduate Diploma In Management, the equivalent of an MBA. Other courses offered at IIMB include, the Executive Post Graduate Programme in Management, a full time, one year, residential course, for candidates with at least 7 years of experience at a middle or senior managerial position, the Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy Management, which trains students to work in the Government administration, the Post Graduate Programme in Software Enterprise Management, a part time course which provides generic management education in the software industry and the Fellow Programme in Management, which encourages academic research.

IIMB has tie ups and student exchange programmes with over 100 institutions across the globe, including Booth School of Business, London Business School, Yale School of Management, Melbourne Business School, University of Cologne, European Business School among others. IIM Bangalore is officially recognized as the best business school in Central Asia by Eduniversal Rankings. It also ranked 4th on the QS Global 200 B-schools report list. According to a study by the QS Global 200 B-School report, the average GMAT scores of IIMB students is 780, an average higher than that of students at Stanford or Harvard.
