The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, abbreviated as IIST, is a public institute of higher education, learning and research and is located in Valiamala, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The university was formed in the year 2007 by the Government of India. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is the chancellor and K.S. Dasgupta is the director of the university. There are about 100 administrative member and around 80 faculty member at the campus.
The institute offers undergraduate, Postgraduate and Ph.D programs in space science and technology. The admission for B.Tech programs is done through the JEE (Main), (Joint Entrance Examination) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The admission for M.Tech Programs are done through GATE and for Ph.D programs the admission is done through Personal Interview. The are three section of academic department which includes Science ( department of physics, department of earth and space sciences, department of mathematics and department of chemistry), Technology ( department of avionics and department of aerospace engineering) and Humanities ( department of humanities).
The institute also have massive students clubs which includes astronomy club, quiz club,, material science club and physics club. There are two annual cultural festivals which includes Conscientia ( annual science and technology festivals), Dhanak ( annual cultural festival) and Model United Nations ( inter-college festival). Dhanak festival has activities like fine arts, music, literature, film-making, dance, quizzing, photography and dramatics. The IIST has associations with the University Space Research Association and CALTECH
