Indian Institute of Technology is among the topmost engineering colleges of India and it is situated in Powai area of Mumbai, this public engineering college is also the second college of IIT group. This college was founded in the year 1958 and in 1961 Parliament of the country declared the IITs as Institutes of National Importance. The institute’s first batch started with a total of 100 students who were admitted in the year 1958, the institute has now expanded in an area of about 2.396 gross square feet. IIT Bombay was established with the assistance of UNESCO and also Soviet Union contributed funds for this institution, the foundation stone of this institute was laid by country’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru on March 10 1959.
The institute offers graduation programs in fields of Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It currently this institute runs over all 17 departments, 3 multi-disciplinary centers and also three schools of excellence. The admissions in IIT Bombay is done on the basis of Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination(IIT-JEE), which is an yearly entrance examination in through which admission is proceeded in all colleges of IIT. The campus of IIT Bombay is situated at Powai area that is a suburb that lies in between of Powai and Vihar lakes in the north eastern region of the Mumbai city. The campus consists of a group of buildings which includes main buildings, department buildings and auditoria etc, all of these main and supplementary buildings are connected by a corridor called as Infinite Corridor. The campus comprises of about 15 hostels among which two hostels are allocated for female students. Institute also has swimming pools and grounds for various sports. Two high schools named as IIT Campus schools are also present in this campus among which one belongs to KVS group.
Apart from studies IIT also focuses on cultural activities which include speaking, drama, literary arts, music and fine arts. Various quizzing writing and debate activities here have been among the most popular activities that are regularly conducted in this institution. The institute also has won the National Law School Parliamentary Debating Tournament. Mood Indigo is a cultural festival held in every December in IIT Bombay, all the college festivals are organized by the students of the college whereas private enterprise sponsors them. The annual Science and Technology festival is a Techfest in IIT, Bombay that is held in January month of every year and this Techfest is also popular as the largest of its kind in Asia. Campus also engages in business activities with the Entrepreneurship Cell in the college which supports the growth of startups across the globe.
The Institute recently on August 10, 2013 held its 51st convocation in which the chief guest was Mr. S. Ramadorai, Vice Chairman of Tata Consultancy Services.
