Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, also known as IIT Guwahati or IITG was established in 1994 by the Government of India, in Assam. IITG is an engineering and technology based institute of higher education and it is the sixth IIT institute which was established in india.

The Campus of IITG is located on the bank of Brahmaputra which is in North Guwahati town of Amingoan. The area of campus is about 700 acres about 20 km from the main city of Guwahati. One side of the campus faces majestic Brahmaputra river, hills and huge open space. The departments of the Guwahati Campus are Department of Biotechnology, Department of Chemistry, Department of Civil Engineering(CE) Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Electronics & Electrical Engineering (previously known as Department of Electronics and Communication), Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Physics, Department of Design, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Mathematics, and Department of Mechanical Engineering. IITG has approximately 3948 students at present at its campus with 215 faculty members and more than 300 stuff.

IIGT hold the position between 551-600 internationally in the QS World University Rankings of 2011. In QS Asian University Rankings 2012 IIGT was ranked on 89th Position, whereas in India Today ranking 2012 it holds 10th position.

IITG has six research center in its campus which are Centre for Educational Technology Centre for Nanotechnology, Central Instruments Facility, Centre for Mass Media Communication, Centre for Energy and Centre for the Environment. IIGT also organise Entrepreneurship Summit which is conducted by the Entrepreneurial Development Cell (EDC) to inspire young students of North-East India to become entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship Summit held once a year in the month of march and its a 3 day activity, in which they host workshops and networking sessions.

Techniche is an techno-management festivals which is held in the month of september every year for 3-4 days. Techniche is a platform which provides students across india to participate and interact with experts in relevant fields through lecture. Techniche lecture has been addressed by H.C. Verma, R Chidambaram, Mike Fincke, Kiran Bedi, John C Mather and many more. Alcheringa is an annual Cultural festival which is held in the month of February, its an event of 4 nights and 3 days and students from across India comes and participate in the festival with the footfall of more than 40,000 participants/contestants.
