Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, also known as IIT Kanpur or IIT-K, is an Institute of engineering and technology located in Kanpur, India. IIT-K was established in 1959 with in collaboration with Nine US research universities as part of Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP). IIT-K was announced s Institute of National Importance by Government of India under the act of Information Technology.

IIT-K is spread out in the area of 1,000 acres and located on Grand Trunk Road, Kanpur City. It is about 2 hours from Lucknow airport and about 16 km from the Kanpur central Railway Station. The land of IIT-Kanpur was a gift from Uttar Pradesh Government to Kanpur in 1960. Admission process of IIT-K is through the national-level Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) although ministry of HRD has decided to replace IIT-JEE exams with Common engineering entrance examination, it will be conducted on the advance level of JEE entrance examination. The process of postgraduate admission is through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) .

The academic departments of IIT-K are Computer Science & Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biological Sciences & Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, and Mathematics and statistics. Since the year 2011, IIT-K have started four year program of BS in sciences and M.Tech, MBA and Dual degree programme for five-years and entrance exam for these courses are through CPI of students.

Postgraduate program of IIT-K offers M.Tech and Ph.D degrees. IIT also offers two year degree programs of M.Sc, MBA and M.des. The admission process for these courses are CAT instead of JMET. The institute has laboratories of Civil Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Biological Science and Bioengineering.The programs offered by IIT-K are Center for Urban Research and Planning, Center for Ocean Engineering, Center for Industrial Research and Development, Center for Education Research & Development, Center for Research and Innovation, Center for Laser Technology, Center for Technological Innovation, Center for IT and Software Research, Center for Clean Water and Clean Energy, Center for Environmental Research, Center for Integrated Science and Center for Nuclear Engineering.

IIT-K offers impeccable student life at its campus. There are various student festival organised by IIT-K which includes National events, Antaragni, Techkriti, Udghosh and Intra IITK events. Apart from these festivals there are other facilities for students at IIT-K campus which includes Presidential Council, Student’s Gymkhana, Cultural Council, Films & Media Council, Student Publications, Science & Technology Council, and Student voluntary services.
