The Indian School of Mines, is a Deemed University located in the town of Dhanbad, in the State of Jharkhand, India. The University was established by the pre-independence British India Government, based on the Royal School of Mines in London. The University began as an institution providing higher education exclusively in the fields of mining, but has now evolved into a technical multidisciplinary University. The University has an academic staff of 220 employees, and has over 3000 undergraduate and over 1800 postgraduate students. The University has a campus of over 220 acres and is in the process of buying neighbouring land that will effectively double the size of the University campus.
