The Karnataka State Open University is an autonomous distance learning institution of Higher Education located in the city of Mysore, state of Karnataka, India. The University was established on the 1st of June 1996 by the State Government of Karnataka under the 1992 Act, Karnataka State Open University Act with the aim to promote an open University system in Karnataka state. The Karnataka State Open University was initially an Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Education under the University of Mysore. The University is the eighth University of Open nature in India.
The University has grown in the 18 years since its establishment and now supports over 40000 students from all over the country. The University is divided into 6 Schools under which its 17 Departments function. These are the School of Humanities which heads the departments of Hindi, Sanskrit, Kannada, English, Urdu and Telugu, the School of Social Sciences under which the departments of Economics, Sociology, Political Science, History, Psychology, Library & Info Science and Mass Comm & Journalism function, the School of Science which covers the departments of Information Technology, Food & Nutrition and Environmental Science function, the School of Law, the School of Education and the School of Commerce. All this functions from the University campus located on a lush 15 acre piece of land near the Mangalore-Mysore highway, in the University of Mysore campus of Manasagangotri. This campus houses the admin offices, the lecture halls, a library and a few living quarters for students attending examinations or contact programs.
