The Kalamandalam Deemed University of Art and Culture, also called the Kerala Kalamandalam is one of the major centres for higher learning in Indian classical performing arts, especially the forms that were developed in South India, particularly from Kerala. The University is located in a village called Cheruthuruthy from the district of Thrissur, Kerala, India. The University was established in the November of 1930 initially in a place called Kunnamkulam but was shifted to its current located in 1933.
The Kerala Kalamandalam includes courses in various theatre forms and classical dances such as Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, Thullal, Kudiyattam, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Panchavadyam and Nangiar Koothu. Percussion specialists in various instruments such as maddalam, chenda and mizhavu are also trained by the University.
The Kerala Kalamandalam owes its grants to the Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Kerala. Special funding is acquired by the University for various occasions from the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi and the Department of Culture, Government of India. Students from the University have participated in most of the theatre-dance festivals happening in Europe, Canada and USA for the past fifty years with Koodiyattam and Kathakali troupes.
Foreign students are also allowed admission in the University as long as they have an instinct for either dance or music in contemporary or classical styles. Indian students can apply for programmes by first contacting the University office for various details such as duration, fee and other costs etc.
