The Kurukshetra University is an autonomous, public institution of higher learning and education located in the city of Kurukshetra in the state of Haryana, India. The University is an active member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The University was the brainchild of the old Punjab Governor, Chandeshwar Singh, who was a Sanskrit scholar and wanted to promote such Indian cultural values and traditions. In fact, when the University was finally inaugurated in 1957 by the then President of India, Rajendra Prasad, the only department the University had was the department of Sanskrit.
The Kurukshetra University has various departments under its wing, including the Departments of Commerce, Biochemistry, Botany, Communication, Demography, Environmental Sciences, Economics, Education, Fine Arts, Geology, Geophysics, Hindi, Information Technology, Law, Linguistics, Management Studies, Music, Mathematics, Microbiology, Mechanics, Neuroscience, Punjabi, Statistics, Space Science, Urban Studies, Zoology among many others. The University also has various colleges and schools namely, the Institute of Environmental Studies, University College Kurukshetra, University Senior Secondary Model School, University College of Education, University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Institute of Instrumentation Engineering, Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Institute of Mass Communication and Media Technology. The University recently started an Institute of Management Studies in 2003, to provide the industry with good managers and inculcate world class entrepreneurs. To achieve this goal, an integrated five year, practice oriented MBA program is carried out. Each student attending this MBA course has to participate in a month long training program after each semester, and prepare a report and a presentation on the same. Such activities keep the students of the University always in touch with the needs of the industry.
