The Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education is an institution in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, that was established by the Ministry of Education and Culture, Government of India, in the month of August, 1957. The college was initially named as Lakshmibai College of Physical Education in honor of Rani Lakshmibai, a valiant queen who laid down her life for the freedom struggle in 1857. The Institute was affiliated with the Vikram University from Ujjain till the year 1964 after which the mantle was passed down to the Jiwaji University of Gwalior. In 1973, the Institute was given the status of “Institute of National Importance” and as such was renamed to Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education.
The Institute made further progress and was given the status of an Autonomous College with the University of Jiwaji itself. Finally, in the September of 1995, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, assigned the Institute the status of “Deemed University”. The name was once again changed, and was renamed to its current name, Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education. The institute is the first Institute in India to achieve a status of Deemed University in the area of Physical Education and Sports Research. The University is also one of a kind in all of South Asia. The University has various departments which include, the Department of Exercise Physiology, the Department of Physical Education Pedagogy, the Department of Sports Biomechanics, the Department of Sports Psychology, the Department of Health Sciences and Fitness, the Centre for Advanced Studies and the Centre for sports coaching and management. Each department offers various graduate and postgraduate courses.
