The University of Mysore, or the Mysore University is an autonomous, public University located in the city of Mysore, Karnataka state, India. The University was founded by the Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, on the 27th of July 1916. The University was granted recognition by the University Grants Commission on the 3rd of March 1956, when it was officially made into a state University. The University of Mysore is the oldest University in the state of Karnataka and the 6th oldest University in all of India.
The University, in recent times, has restructured itself to lay emphasis on basic sciences. Integrated post graduate courses in chemistry, physics and biochemistry were recently introduced. The University, with the help of grants from the Form Foundations, has also recently set up a Third Sector Research Resource Centre. The Centre offers masters programs and diploma programs in Nonprofit Management. The Mysore University School of Justice was integrated into the Mysore University recently which now enables the University to offer 5 year integrated courses in Law. The University also runs an evening college for those underprivileged students who cannot attend classes in the day. The University Evening College has been up and running since 1965 and as such is a lifeline for underprivileged locals who want to pursue a higher education. In the year of 2010, the University was awarded the National Service Scheme award for enabling a space for young students to enlighten and participate in the economic, legal, social and environmental issues plaguing society today.
