The National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management or NIASM is a deemed University, focussed on research in abiotic stress management, located in the town of Malegaon in Baramati, Maharashtra, India.. The University is run by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research or ICAR as dictated by the 11th 5 year plan, forged by the Government of India in 2007.
Agriculture faces a lot of challenges from abiotic stresses such as floods, extreme temperatures, acidity, salinity, mineral toxicity, drought and nutrient deficiency, which bring down the productivity of livestock, agriculture and fisheries. This problem is recognized world over, and many countries have already commissioned dedicated institutions to research and mitigate the effects of such abiotic stresses. Being a tropical, agricultural country, with a lot depending on crop outcomes, the Government of India decided to institute an institution of higher education, to promote research in abiotic stress management. This led to the establishment of the National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management.
While institutions like the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and State Agricultural Universities are already working on the problems related with abiotic stresses, their efforts are not quite enough to deal with a problem of this magnitude. The National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management plans to fix this problem by, not only encouraging research on dealing with combinations of various abiotic stresses, but also by using modern technology and tools such as nanotechnology, information technology, remote sensing, biotechnology and polymer science to increase crop production and retention via water and soil management.
National Institute of Abiotic Stress Management (NIASM) is a government located at in Pune district of Maharashtra, India.
