National Institute of Technology Agartala, abbreviated as NIT Agartala or NIT-A, is a public institute of Engineering and Technology, located in Agartala, India. It was established in 1965 by the Government of India, earlier it was called Tripura Engineering College (TEC). It was renamed as National Institute of Technology in 2006.
The campus of NIT-Agartala is spread out in the area of 335 acres and located in the outskirts of Agartala city and its about four km from the National Highway-44. Jirania railway station is the closest station from the campus. National Institute of Technology Agartala offers undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs. Undergraduate programs includes B.Tech and postgraduate programs includes M.tech in chemical engineering, civil engineering, CSE, ECE, Electrical engineering, Mechanical engineering and instrumentation engineering. In July 2013, NIT-Agartala introduced dual-degree programs in engineering physics, five year program in applied physics, mathematics and chemistry. Additionally, it also offers MCA, CDAAC and Ph.D programs. The admission process for undergraduate program is through JEE-MAIN and for postgraduate program, the admission mode is through GATE( Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). The admission procedure for MCA is through NIMCET and for Ph.D, the admission procedure is through personal interviews and group discussion.
The academic departments of NIT-Agartala are Bio-engineering, civil engineering,Chemical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, Dual degree in Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Master of Computer Applications, Master of Business and Administration, School of Hydro-Informatics Engineering, Applied Mathematics(BS-MS dual degree), Applied Physics(BS-MS dual degree), Applied Statistics(BS-MS dual degree) and Chemistry (BS-MS dual degree). in 2013, the department of Mechanical and civil engineering got accredited by the National Board of Accreditation for 5 years whereas the department of electrical engineering is accredited for 2 years.
The facilities offered by NIT-Agartala are central library, computer services with good internet facilities, boarding facilities, medical, auditorium, sporting, transportation, banking, etc. There are 5 hostels at the campus of NIT-A and it has been divided in two parts boys hotel and girls hostel. Four hostel has been allocated to boys and one for girls. One of the boys hotel named Aryabhatta has capacity of 1200 and other hostels have capacity of over 150 and the capacity of girls hostel is around 500. There are two major annual festival of NIT-Agartala, Moksha and Ayaam. Moksha is an annual cultural festival organised for 4 days every year and Ayaam is an annual techno-management festival organised by undergraduate students of NIT-Agartala.
