The National Institute of Technology Silchar or NIT Silchar is one among the 30 National Institutes of Technology established in India. It was established as a Regional Engineering College in the year of 1967 in the state of Assam. In the year of 2002 the University was upgraded to the status of a National Institute of Technology along with being declared an Institute of National Importance as provided under the 2007 act called the National Institutes of Technology Act.
The National Institute of Technology Silchar offers various graduate and undergraduate programs in Science, Humanities and Engineering. The University boasts of over 11 departments and more than 200 faculty staff along with a student base of over 350 M.Tech students, 2200 B.Tech students, 105 PhD students, 75 MBA students and more than 30 MSc scholars. A Kendriya Vidyalaya also (temporarily) runs from the college campus and offers education up to class eight. The 11 main departments of the University include 6 engineering departments namely, Computer science and engineering, electronics and instrumentation engineering, electronics and communication engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering along with 5 non engineering departments including, Humanities and social sciences, Management Studies, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
All the 6 departments in the engineering section offer B.Tech degrees for which the admission happens through the common entrance exam of JEE-Main. The National Institute of Technology at Silchar also follows the official reservation policy laid out by the government of India, which dictates 27% of the seats be reserved for OBCs (other backward classes), 15% of the seats for SCs (Scheduled Castes) and finally 7.5% for the STs (Scheduled Tribes). A scheme called the Direct Admission for Students Abroad or DASA is used by foreign nationals or non residential Indians to gain admission to the NITS. The University also offer various M.Tech degrees in Geotechnical Engineering, Water Resource Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, Design and Manufacturing, Thermal Engineering, VLSI, Power system Engineering and MSc in applied chemistry.
The National Institute of Technology Silchar has a fully fledged residential campus. The campus houses a total of 10 hostels, 8 for the boys, and 2 for the girls. Each hostel is provided with a high speed LAN access and Internet access. Each hostel is cared for by a warden and the Board of Hostel Management, while the messes are taken care of by the students themselves or by a private organization. The Institute also has a SBI branch inside of the campus along with a couple of SBI ATMs and a PNB ATM to take care of the students banking needs. In addition, shopping facilities are available at the market complex near the centre of the campus, which houses general provision stores, scanners, xerox, printers, cobbler, barber and several canteens. A post office is also maintained on the campus by the Indian Post. Medical facilities include an infirmary to provide medicine to all students under the Group Mediclaim Policy. The University also has a large Central Library which has a collection of over 81000 books, 130 print journals, 4500 bound volumes, 3200 digital media, 900+ videos, various databases, thesis, annual reports and project reports among other archived knowledge.
