National Institute of Technology Calicut, also known as NITC or NIT-Calicut, is a public institute of Engineering and Technology located in Calicut, Kerala, India. It was established in 1961 by the Government of India and earlier it used to called as Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC), it was renamed as National Institute of Technology Calicut in the year 2002.
The campus occupies land of 420 acres and located in Chathamangalam, around 22 km north east of Kozhikode. NIT-Calicut has it very own supercomputer. The academic department has been divided into four parts which includes Engineering departments, schools, science departments and allied department. Engineering departments includes Department of Architecture, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Computer Science, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering. Schools consists School of Biotechnology, School of Management Studies and School of Nanoscience and Technology. Science department has Department of Chemistry, Department of Mathematics and Department of Physics and Allied department has Department of Physical Education.
NIT-Calicut offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs which includes, B.Tech, B.Arch, M.Tech. MCA, MBA, M.Sc and Ph.D. The admission process for undergraduate program is through JEE-MAIN. For postgraduate program the admission process is through GATE, for MBA admission, students have to go through CAT examination, for MCA programs the admission process is through NIMCET and for Ph.D course (which includes engineering, science disciplines and management), the admission mode is through personal interviews and group discussion. The institute also have International Liaison Office to keep a tap on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between NIT-Calicut and other foreign institute. Institute who has signed MoUs with NIT-Calicut includes Auburn University, USA, for research in Photonics, NITK Surathkal for research and academics and NIT-Sikkim for mentoring.
NIT-Calicut has been ranked at number 13 by the Indian Today Best Engineering Colleges, 2012. It ranked 18 by the Mint top 50 Government Engineering Colleges of 2009 and ranked 5 by the outlook India Best Architecture colleges in India, 2013. NIT-Calicut possess residential area in the campus which includes 13 hostels. The hostel is divided into two parts, girls hostel and boys hostel. There are 12 hostels for boys and one for girls. There are two major annual festivals organised by NIT-Calicut, Tathva and Ragam. Tathva is an annual techno-management festival, it helds in the September every year and it includes competition, paper presentation, quizzes, robotics events, model display and exhibitions. Ragam is an annual cultural festival which holds events like trivia quizzes, rock-show, dance competitions and music concerts.
