National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, commonly known as NITDGP or NIT-Durgapur, is a public institute of Engineering and Technology, located in Durgapur, West Bengal, India. It was established in 1960 by chief minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy and used to known as Regional Engineering College, Durgapur (RECDGP). NITDGP also classified as Institute of National Importance under the NAtional Institute of Technology Act, 2007.
The campus of NITDGP occupies area of 187 acres and it is about hundred and sixty km north-west of Kolkata on the railway route of Howrah-Delhi. NIT-Durgapur offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in science, management and engineering. It 16 academic departments at its campus and each of them has active research department. The research department of NITDGP is been sponsored by reputed government agencies as well as Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Department of Science and Technology (DST).The admission process for undergraduate (B.Tech) program is through JEE-MAIN, organised by Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi. For foreign students, the admission mode is through DASA scheme. Admission process for Postgraduate (M.Tech) programs is through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). For MBA, the process is through CAT and for MCA admission students have to go through National Institute of Technology MCA Common Entrance Test (NIMCET).
The facilities offered by NITDGP are high-voltage laboratory, state of the art computing facilities, LAN, library and so on. The computer department of NITDGP has a CISCO lab in association with CISCO. Each and every department has its own computer lab with specialised engineering and scientific packages such as AUTOcad, IDEAS, MATLAB, STADD PSpice, AFS, ANSYS, Sybase and PowerBuilder. The placement rate of institute is brilliant, around hundred and two companies participate in the placement session of NITDGP. The library possess over 1.5 lakh volumes which includes reference books, bound volumes of journals, standards, textbooks and many more reading material. In November, 2010, an international conference on Computation, Modelling and Optimization was organised by chemical department of NIT-Durgapur. In 2011, an international conference on Water Resources and Adaptation to Climate changes was also organised by Civil Engineering department of NITDGP in collaboration with Lund University, Sweden. NIT- Durgapur also have scholarship in Europe.
The festival celebrated in campus of NITDGP are Recstacy (also known as REX), Aarohan, Motor Zundung, ANK, Verve and Mukti. REX is an annual cultural festival organized every year in February for four nights and 3 days, nearly 8,000 of students across the country participate in this festival. Aaroha is an annual National Techno-Management festival, this is a four day event which organised by NIT-Durgapur. It includes arts, presentations, exhibitions, workshops, competitions, seminar, lectures, model display and robotics events.
