National Institute of Technology Karnataka, also known as NITK or NIT-Karnataka, is a public institute of Engineering and Technology located in Mangalore, Karnataka, India. It was established in 1960 with the name of Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), by the Government of India. It also classified as an Indian Institute of National Importance with the status of Deemed University. The campus of NIT-Karnataka occupies 295 acres of land and located near NH66 (National Highway) on the sides of Arabian Sea. The campus has its own private beach as well as a light house.

The campus also owns a marketing centre and 2 cooperative societies, canara bank, state bank of India as well as ATM, post office, staff club, guest house, schools (Kannada and English medium), hospital, food court and a playground. In ranking NIT-Karnataka holds position of 8 on India Today Best Engineering colleges, 2012 and number 13 on the Outlook India Top Engineering Colleges of 2012. It has been consistently awarded as one of the best NITs of the country.

NIT-Karnataka offers undergraduate as well as postgraduate programs. NIT-Karnataka have 11 support centres, over 300 support staff, 14 academic departments, 200 faculty members, 15,500 alumni and 5,500 students. The admission procedure for NIT-Karnataka undergraduate program is through All India Engineering Entrance Examinations (AIEEE). There are 3 section in the exam which includes Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. However, according to new law, 2013 onwards the entrance exam will be conducted through JEE(Main). Candidate who scored 60% marks in the given examination along with 40% marks in 10+2 will be eligible to get admission in NIT-Karnataka. DASA ( Direct Admission of students Abroad) admission mode is for foreign student. Admission process for postgraduate programs is through GATE(Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) which is organised by the Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science. Postgraduate students have to complete coursework and thesis/dissertation including independent research. Recently, NIT-Karnataka has introduced MBA course by the humanities department, admission process of MBA is through CAT and for MCA, admission process is through NIMCET.

The four major annual festival of NIT-Karnataka are Crrescendo, Engineer, Incident and Online technical. Engineer is a national level technical symposium, it is organised every year last week of October. Crrescendo is biggest intra-college festival, which includes competition in art, music, literature and personality. Incident is a cultural festival organised by NITK every year in the February, the festival usually takes place in the last week of February every year.
