National Institute of Technology Rourkela, abbreviated as NIT Rourkela, is an institute of Technology and Engineering, located in Rourkela, Odisha, India. It was established in August 15th, 1961 by Government of India and recognised as Institute of National Importance under the act of National Institute of Technology, 2007. Earlier, it used to be known as Regional College Rourkela (REC Rourkela).
NIT- Rourkela is a deemed university and it is located in Rourkela Steel City, which comes under the Ranchi-Bhubaneshwar and Howrah-Mumbai railway routes. The NIT-Rourkela campus is about 7 km from the railway station and it spread out in the area of 462 hectares. It is the second largest engineering institute in India, the first one if IIT Kharagpur. NIT-R has been awarded as Outstanding Engineering Institute and Best Engineering College by ABP News. In Outlook India’s top engineering colleges ranking of 2012, NIT-R ranked at the number 19th and it achieved 26th rank in the Mint top 50 government engineering colleges of 2009.
The infrastructure of NIT-R is quite brilliant , it includes classrooms, administrative and Academic sections and the central library . Additionally it owns departments of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Humanities. Each department has its own workshop, Laboratory, lecture gallery and audio -visual hall.
The admission process of NIT-R is through All India Engineering Entrance Examination, (AIEEE). NIT-R has over 17 academic departments and it offers B.Tech, B.Tech-M.Tech Dual, M.SC, MBA, PhD, Intergrated M.SC and M.Tech programs. The academic departments are Department of Ceramic Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Chemistry, Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Industrial Design, Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Electronics and communication Engineering,, Department of Electronics and instrumentation Engineering, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Life Science, Department of Mathematics, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Department of Mining Engineering, Department of Physics, Department of School of Management and Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering. Apart from these departments, NIT-R also own three academic centres and 6 service centre.
NIT-R campus also has around 40 clubs and student organisations to support students interests like, debating, sports, social service, literary, quizzing, technical and cultural. The major annual festival of NIT-Rourkela are Innovision, International Students Meet (ISM), Vahaan, Vrittanta and Nitrutsav. Student from all over the country as well as from abroad participate in these cultural program of NIT-R.
