National Institute of Technology, Srinagar, commonly known as NITS or NIT Srinagar is an institute of Engineering and technology located in Srinagar, India. It was established in 1960 by government of India under Ministry of HRD and earlier it was known as Regional Engineering College (REC), Srinagar.
The campus of NIT-Srinagar is located in western bank of the world heritage site, near Dal Lake, east Srinagar city. The campus is surrounded with beauty of Kashmir Valley and scenic himalayan ranges, located northern region of the country. In Outlook India’s survey of Best Engineering College 2013, NIT Srinagar ranked at number 57 and it ranked number 31 on Best Government Engineering College ranking 2013. The objectives of NIT-Srinagar is “To achieve excellence in imparting technical education” as well as to spread awareness about computer education across the country.
The admission mode of NIT-Srinagar Undergraduate program (B.Tech) is through Joint Entrance Examination (MAIN), Formerly All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and DASA (Through SAT, for foreign students ). The admission process for Postgraduate programs is through GATE, Graduate Aptitude Test of Engineering and through CCMT counselling. The campus placement of NIT-Srinagar is excellent, it achieved 100% placement rate in CSE, ECE and IT, 95% in Electrical Engineering, 98% Mechanical Engineering, 85% in Metallurgical and Material Engineering, 42% in Chemical engineering and 39% in civil engineering. The student of NIT-Srinagar are placed across India as well as abroad.
NIT-Srinagar has 3 academic departments which includes B.Tech ( courses in B.Tech includes Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering degree, Electronics and communication Engineering course, Electrical Engineering course, Information Technology, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering course, and Metallurgical and Material Engineering), M.Tech (courses of M.tech includes Water Resources Engineering, Structural Engineering, Communication and Information Technology, Industrial Tribology and Maintenance Management , Electrical Power and Energy System and Mechanical System Design) and the third department is Arts and Science ( which includes Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Humanities).
The student facilities at NIT-Srinagar campus are excellent, these facilities include, Computer Services Center with internet facilities even the student hostels are Wi-Fi enabled, central library, student gymkhana, shopping unit and other amenities. The campus hostel has capacity of 1000 students. The interior of Maintenance Engineering Centre has been done in Indo-Italian style.
NIT-Srinagar celebrates 3 days national level science and technology festival called Techvaganza, which is held in the month of April every year. Techvaganza have exhibitions and display of new technology from around the country. The festival is completely managed by students and sponsored by reputed corporate companies.
