National Institute of Technology - NIT Tiruchirappalli, Thiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu

The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, also called NITT, is an Institute of Engineering and Technology located at Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu state of India. It was established in the year 1964 by government of India and earlier it used to be known as Regional Engineering College and it is also recognised as Institute of National Importance.

The campus of NITT is spread out into 800 acres and it is located at the outskirts of Tiruchirappalli city. NITT have undergraduate and graduate programs in science, engineering, management and architecture. NITT have 16 academic departments along with three thousand and four hundred students as well as around 300 faculty members. The research department of NIIT is mostly sponsored by reputed government agencies along with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Department of Science and Technology (DST). NITT has brilliant placement rates and more than 160 companies take part in placement process every year.

The admission process for undergraduate program (B.Tech) of NITT is through All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). NITT also has 27% reservation policy for Other Backward Classes (OBC) students, 15% for SCs (Scheduled Castes) class and 7.5 % for STs (Scheduled Tribes) class. Non-resident Indians can apply through independent scheme known as DASA, Direct Admission for Student Abroad. The admission mode for postgraduate programs like M.Tech and M.Sc is through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and for MCA courses the admission mode is through NIMCET.

NITT was ranked number 9 on the India Today Best Engineering College 2012, 10 on Outlook India Top Engineering College. NITT is considered as one of the best NITs college in country.

The academic facilities of NITT includes laboratories and workshops, computer centres and central library and lecture hall. Each and every departments has its own library apart from the central library on NITT which has over one lakh reading materials. The primary computer center of NITT is known as OCtagon and it has eight computer labs along with printing facilities. Over 6000 students uses 10 gigs of LAN setup internet at campus. The sports area has indoor badminton courts, swimming pool, outdoor stadium, fitness centre, cricket field, basketball court and indoor table tennis tables.

The student activities at NITT campus are National cadet corps, National sports Organisation or National Service Scheme, performing arts and annual events includes festember, nittfest, Pragyan. Festember is an annual cultural festival, held in the month of september every year and it includes music, dance and literary competition.
