The National Law School of India University is an institution for higher education in the fields of law, was sanctioned by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and inaugurated on the 29th of August 1987. The Chancellor of the University is the Chief Justice of India while the current chief administrator is Venkata Rao.
The admissions to National Law School of India University happen through the Common Law Admission Test which was introduced in 2008. Prior to the CLAT exams, the University conducted its own entrance exams for admissions. The Undergraduate courses offered at NLSIU include the LL.B/BA course, allows the student to practice law in India. The first couple of years are spent by the student learning about sociology, political science, economics, history and the standard law subjects. The final 3 years of the course include mostly legal subjects. The postgraduate courses offered at NLSIU include the LL.M degree, a 2 year course, LL.D, Ph.D and M.Phil. For students that pick the LL.M course, there are two specialization options, human rights law and business law. There are only 25 seats available for each course. The NLSIU also offers various distance learning programs such as the Masters in Business Law and postgraduate diploma courses in Medical Law, IP law, Human Rights Law and Environmental Law.
The National Law School of India University has a very active students life. Various student activities are conducted by the Student Bar Association such as competitive debating. Students at NLSIU have also won the Jessup Cup twice, the only law school in South-east Asia to do so. The University has consistently ranked #1 as the best law school in India.
