The National Museum Institute of History of Art Conservation and Museology is an institute of higher education in New Delhi. The University was registered and instituted on the 27th of January 1989 using the Societies Registration Act of 1860 and was awarded the status of “Deemed to be a University” on the 28th of April 1989. Since the very beginnings this Institute has been a leading institute in India for research and training in the fields of cultural heritage and arts. The University is located inside the premise of the National Museum in the belief that this will help the students studying there have direct exposure to the cultural heritage and masterpieces of art stored there in addition to getting access to its library, laboratory, reserve/storage collection.
The National Museum Institute of History of Art Conservation and Museology has three Departments, namely the Department of History of Art, the Department of Conservation and the Department of Museology. The Department of History of Art promotes excellence, engagement and creativity in its basic functions of learning, research and teaching. The Departments has a range of courses on Western, Asian and Indian Art. The Department is also known to organize special guest lectures, Seminars, National and International Workshops, Exhibitions and various Conferences. The Department of Conservation is a centre for research and training in the preservation and conservation of cultural and artistic heritage of India. The Department of Museology of this Institute is the only one in India which functions entirely inside of the museum premises. The Department has played an important role in museum research and study.
