The National University of Advanced Legal Studies, formerly known as the National Institute for Advanced Legal Studies, is a University for law in the district of Kochi, Kerala, India. The University is uni-disciplinary and offers various undergraduate, postgraduate and graduate courses in legal education. The Institute was established in 2004, to advance knowledge and learning in the fields of legal and law processes and to strengthen and reform the administration and delivery of justice in India. The Minister of Education for Kerala state is the Pro-Chancellor of the University, while the Chief Justice of the High Court in Kerala is its Chancellor.
The University lies on a campus 10 acres large, and houses 350+ under graduate students, 10+ post graduate students, 20+ doctoral students and various staff members over 7 buildings. The University has 7 centres for research and higher studies, namely, the Centre for Law and Development, the Centre for Law and Enviornment, the Centre for Law and Agriculture, the Centre for Parliamentray Studies and Law reforms, the Centre for Consumer Protection Law and Policy, the Centre for Continuing Legal Education and Extension and the Inter-Disciplinary Centre for Police Studies. The University runs an LL.M course in Constitutional and Adminstrative Law as well as International Trade Law. Admissions for these courses are conducted through the Common Law Admission Test. NUALS also has a Ph.D program for those who wish to pursue further education. The University also has tie ups with various International Universities, such as a Teacher-Student Exchange Program with the University of Paris, France, with Albert-Ludwigs University, Germany and other well known institutions.
