The National University of Study and Research in Law is an institute of higher education in the field of law and justice and is located in the district of Ranchi, state of Jharkhand, India. The University was established by the Government of Jharkhand after passing the legislative act no.4 of 2010, and is the 14th national law University to be established in India. The University was inaugurated by the Supreme Court Judge and the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court designated Sudha Mishra on the 26th of April 2010. The current temporary campus of the University lies within the Mesra campus of Birla Institute of Technology. An area 64 acre large near the outskirts of the city of Ranchi, quite near IIM Ranchi, has been acquired by the University for a permanent campus. When the construction is fully completed, the National University of Study and Research in Law will have the second largest campuses of all the National Law Universities established in India.
The University offers an integrated five year course to students which are selected through the Common Law Admission Test, called the BA(Hons)-LLB(Hons). This course has a socially and politically relevant science and law subjects. The 5 years of the course are divided over 10 semesters, each semester covering a different subject. An interest in research and ample use of the moot court are promoted at the University. The postgraduate programmes offered by the University include a three year long JSD or Doctor of Juridical Science course, an integrated four year LLM-PhD course and the standard 2 year PhD courses.
