The Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth is a University of higher education established by the University Grants Commission under the 3rd section of the UGC Act of 1956. It is a premier University of learning in the fields of Sanskrit studies, Pedagogy and Traditional Sastras. The University receives its funds from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, through the University Grants Commission located in the capital of India, New Delhi.
The University was inaugurated in the year of 1961 in Tirupati, in the state of Andhra Pradesh while the foundation stone for its campus was laid on the 4th of January 1962 by the then Vice President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. In the year of 1971, the University was brought under the control of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan and was eventually deemed as a University by the Government of India in the year of 1987. The University has also achieved the distinction of being a Centre of Excellence in the Traditional Sastras and an A+ accreditation with the NAAC.
The Objective of the University is to impart education in Sanskrit, to speed up the process of higher learning in this language and to combine modern scientific research with traditional Sanskrit. The courses offered by the University include undergraduate courses such as Sastri, Sastri Vedabhashya, B.A and B.Sc, postgraduate courses such as Acharya, M.A in Sanskrit, M.Sc in Computer Science and Language Technology, PG Diploma in Stress Management and Yoga Therapy and PG Diploma in Comparative Aesthetics. The University also offers various part time courses, research courses and professional courses.
