Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology(NIT Surat or SVNIT), is a public engineering and technology, located in Surat, Gujarat, India. It was established in 1961 by Government of India and it classified as Institute of National Importance. Initially, the purpose of SVNIT was to produce scientist and engineers to aid India’s growing need for R&D and technological manpower.

The campus of SVNIT occupies land of 265 acres and surrounded with green forest. The main campus entrance faces Surat-Dumas Highway and it is situated about 13 km from the Surat Railway station. The institute has residential area has 5000 inhabitants which includes about 3,500 students and over 210 faculty members. SVNIT also owns, central research facilities, laboratories, lecture halls, computer centre, hospital, bank, athletic facilities, students halls of residence, civic amenities and central library. The central library has nearly 150,000 books and documents. It has over 600 printed and online journals.

Apart from this it has 10 academic departments which includes Applied Mathematics and Humanities, .Applied Mechanics, Chemical Department, Civil Engineering Department, Computer Engineering Department, Electrical Department, Electronics Department, Mechanical Department, Applied Physics Department and Applied Chemistry Department. SVNIT offers undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D programs. The admission for undergraduate programs is through All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) and for postgraduate programs the admission process is through GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). The admission procedure for MBA is through CAT/MAT and NIMCET is for MCA programs. For Ph.D programs the admission process is through Personal Interviews or Group Discussions. SVNIT has reservation policy through which 27% of academic seat is allocated to Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 15% for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (STs). Foreign students can also apply through DASA Scheme (Direct Admission for Students Abroad. Through DASA scheme, foreign students gets scholarships by the Government of India.

SVNIT has ranked at number 10 by CSR-GHRDC Engineering Colleges Survey 2011 and it ranked number 18 in India Today’s top 25 engineering colleges in the country, 2011. In each and every education survey, SVNIT has been ranked as one of the best engineering institute of India. The major annual festival of SVNIT are MindBend, Sparsh, Autumnfest, Quest, Chumputi, MMNCT, and JoyFest. Sparsh is an annual cultural festival of SVNIT, which is held every year in March. It is a 5 day festival and huge number of students across the country take part in this festival. It organise events like, Skit Nite, Fashion Nite, Fun-n-fair and Celebrity Nite.
