The Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, formerly known as the Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, was established by the Akhil Bharatiya Sanskrit Sahitya Sammelan on the 8th of October in the year of 1962 in the capital city of New Delhi. The Vidyapeetha was renamed from the Sanskrit Vidyapeetha to the Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha on the 2nd October of 1966 by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi. The Vidyapeeth was taken over by the Government of India on the 1st of April 1967, and was registered as an autonomous Society on the 21st of December of 1970.
The Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth is four main faculties, namely the Faculty of Darshan, the Faculty of Veda and Vedanga, the Faculty of Adhunika Jnana and Vijnana and the Faculty of Sahitya and Sanskriti. The University offers various part time courses which offer diplomas and certificates such as the Paurohitya Certificate, Jyotisha Diploma Certificate, Jyotisha Diploma, PG Diploma in Vastushastra, a Refresher Courses in Jyotisha and the Training Course in Paurohitya. The various undergraduate courses in the Vidyapeetha are offered in Hindi, Ancient Indian History and Computer, Sociology, English, Political Science, Vocational Hindi and Computer and Shastri and Shastri Sammanita course with specializations in Prakrit, Sahitya, Sankhya Yoga, Navya nyaya, Sarva Darshan, Siddhanta Jyotisha, Dharma Shastra available among others. The Vidyapeetha also offers postgraduate courses in the fields of Shikshacharya and Acharya with options to specialize in Advaita Vedanta, Jain Darshan, Mimansa and others.
