The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, also called SMVDU, is an autonomous, public University, established in the town of Karta, state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The University was established under the 1999 Act, The Jammu and Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University Act, which was passed by the Jammu and Kashmir State Legislature on the 12th of May 1999. All the technical courses offered by the University are approved by the All India Council of Technical Education, while its Architecture course is accredited by the Council of Architecture. The University receives its funds from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and from the University Grants Commission of India.
The campus of the University is located on the foothills of the Trikuta hills. It resides on a plot of land over 470 acres in size and has various “blocks”, such as the Residential and Hostel Area, The Administrative Block, Academic Block, Central Library etc. The study halls, seminar and lecture halls, conference rooms, labs, computer labs and other facilities are all well equipped with modern amenities. The University offers various courses to undergraduate, postgraduate and graduate students such as the Bachelor of Technology in various engineering fields, the MBA or Master of Business Administration, the Master of Science in Mathematics, Physics and Biotechnology, the Master of Technology in Computer Science, Electronics and Manufacturing and the Master of Arts in Philosophy and English. The University also has various research centres such as the Center of Excellence in Biotechnology, the Centre for Energy Management and Water Resources and the Centre for Embedded Instrumentation and Networked Controls among others.
