The Tata Institute of Social Sciences, abbreviated as TISS, is a public institute of higher education, learning and research and is located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The institute was formed in the year 1936 by the Government of India and is affiliated by UGC and NAAC. Earlier, it was knowns as Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work but later in 1944, it was renamed as TISS and declared as Deemed University. The director of the institute is S. Parasuraman. The institute has 12 schools and learning centre across the country. The campus of the institute occupies the land of 21 acres and is surrounded by lush, greenery and pleasant sights.
It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, research and Ph.D programs in Social Science. The admission process is done through the common entrance examination conducted by the institute only and the selection of the students are based on their performance in the examination. The central library of the institute is known as ‘Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library’ in the loving memory of Sir Dorabji Tata. The library is the house of 21,000 books, reading material, online journals, national and foreign journals, reference material, periodicals, etc.
