The University of Delhi also called the Delhi University, is an autonomous public Central University based in the capital city of New Delhi, India. The University was initially established in the year of 1922 and had modest beginnings with only two faculties of Science and Arts, three affiliated colleges and only about 700 students or so. Over time the University has grown a lot and today has more than 16 main faculties, 77 affiliated colleges, 86 departments of higher learning and 5 other institutes recognized by the Government all over the city. The University has over 132000 students enrolled in various regular programs and over 260000 students in various non formal courses of education.
The Delhi University has five Centres for Advanced Studies namely geology, chemistry, zoology, history and sociology. The University also has 10 Departments that get grants univer the University Grants Commission, which include, Hindi, Germanic and Romance Studies, Persian, Music, Geography, East Asian Studies and Anthropology. The University has 2 campuses, other than those of its affiliated colleges. The first campus is called the North Campus and it houses 84 departments and 16 faculties. The original 3 colleges of the Delhi University, the Hindu College 1899, the St Stephens College 1881 and the Ramjas College 1917 are also located inside the North Campus. The South Campus on the other hand contains various departments of the Faculties of Arts and has been offering postgraduate degrees since 1973. This campus is well known for its departments of Genetics, Microbiology, Plant Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.
