Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, also known as VNIT or NIT-Nagpur is a public institute of engineering and technology located in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. It was founded in 1960 by the Government of India, earlier it was called Visvesvaraya regional College of Engineering (VRCE). It was renamed as visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology in 2007 and it also classified as Institute of National Importance. The institute has been named after Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, in the honor of engineering, planner and statesman.
The campus of VNIT is spread in the area of 215 acres and situated near Ambazari Lake. The campus is about 8km from the Nagpur Railway Station and about same distance from Nagpur Airport as well. The campus has its own residential area including 12 boys hostels and 2 girls hostels. The entire campus is wi-fi enabled with high-speed internet connection. It also have hospital, bank, cafes, coffee shops, post office, co-operative store, sports facility, computer center and auditoriums. Additionally it has 24*7 canteen called Chandrama and the India Coffee House which is functional during day time.
VNIT has over 30 specialized lab and research centers and its academic department includes, Applied Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Architecture and Planning, Biomechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Science and Engineering, Computational Physics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geoscience and Technology, Geobiology and Astrobiology, Humanities, Hydrologic Engineering, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,Mining Engineering, Neural Engineering, Nuclear Science and Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Polymer Science and Technology, Textile Engineering and Urban Design & Planning.
VNIT offers undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D programs. The admission process for undergraduate program is through JEE Mains and for postgraduate programs the admission process is through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Admission mode for Masters programs like MBA is through CAT/MAT, for MCA is NIMCET and for Ph.D the admission process is through experience in research, group discussion and personal interviews. Foreign students can apply for through DASA scheme.
The institute also participate in national-level events like National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme to motivate students to pursue a different range of interest. VNIT also host SPIC MACAY event to promote Indian Classical music, culture and dance. VNIT has its own rock band which includes Drakshya, Morphine, Rust, Glasnost, Saints of Metal and Vighn. The annual festival of VNIT includes Axis, Aarohi, Consortium and Quizfest.
