The Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, abbreviated to YCMOU, is a public, autonomous University located in the city of Nashik, state of Maharashtra, India. The University was established in the July of 1989 by the Maharashtra State Legislature using the Act XX of 1989 and was named after the great political leader of Maharashtra, Yashwantrao Chavan. This University is also the 5th Open University to be established in India. The scope of the University jurisdiction, initially extending only throughout the state of Maharashtra, has now reached global proportions. The YCMOU is not only recognized by the University Grants Commission Act of 1956 but is also a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Commonwealth of Learning Canada, the Association of Indian Universities and the Asian Association of Open Universities.

The Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University consists of various academic schools namely the School of Agricultural Science, School of Commerce and Management, School of Architecture, Science and Technology, School of Computer Science, School of Education, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Health Sciences and the School of Continuing Education. The University also has a magnificent library which contains over 42000 books, 200 subscribed journals, 3000 DVDs, 300 Audio and 300 Video Cassettes and an International Online Database with more than 4500 journals. YCMOU also has a satellite based streaming video lectures accessible through the web. The initial run included over 30 lectures of more than 2 hours each for students over the Internet. To encourage talent throughout the State the University also presents the following awards to its students. The Vishakha Kavya Puraskar awarded to the best poets among the students, the Baburao Bagul Gaurav Puraskar for budding story writers and the Rukmini Puraskar for those women that make exceptional contributions in their fields, especially in the field of Social work.
